This week’s prompt for Enviro Design with James Paick was:
Location: massive establishing shot, open landscape. Action: Show an enormous ray of light breaking through the stormy clouds. It has pierced the clouds, and struck the earth, and is sticking into the ground at an angle. the light is highlighting a part of a massive burial iconic structure. there are also evidence of small grave sites around the structure as well. Focus: hopeful light in a barren, deathly landscape.
3 concept paintings in monochromatic colors for homework this week in James Paick’s Environment Design class. (I didn’t like the other 2 so not posting haha)
2 black and white concept sketches I liked the most from my batch of hw for this week. James Paick is a beast though. His crits on my hw were amazing and I’ll touch up the other 2 with his crits in mind before I post it.
I made a separate blog for my concept art homework and studies (that i can actually show industry professionals lmao)! I started my term at the Concept Design Academy and this is why I’ve disappeared off the face of earth in terms of other art.
I’m dying to draw some taohun and krishan though so hopefully I can get to those in between my hw/as a reward for finishing hw!!! :D
I’m currently taking a class called Figure Invention for Animation at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena, and for this wk’s homework, we had to caricaturize these set of pictures that the instructor, Toby Shelton (great artist!), posted.
This was so so so so hard ;A; Spent the entire afternoon and part night today trying to really push my shapes and exaggerate features but I think I need to let go even more. Not very happy with most of these…
So for more practice, I’m probably gonna caricature some kpop heads later on this week hahaha. I already have a few people in mind that I’d wanna caricaturize, but if there are particular people who you think have stand-out features (like a large forehead, or large ears, or interesting mouth, etc) send them my way via my ask (I’ll turn Anon on for a few days for this)! Thanks in advance~
Life painting with 2 extreme light sources done in gouache, at tonight’s color and lighting class with Bill Perkins.
Despite a lot of proportional issues (if only real life had ctrl+t), I really liked how the colors turned out. Also, my palette looks pretty hahahah. Yay for studying and improving! :D
Quick pen studies (vis com style yee) of hummingbirds for today’s sketch a day theme of Wings. Gotta work on prints for fanime so this will have to do for today! :D
Some old master copies from 2009 for a class that I took at Cal. I didn’t even know about master copies back then and my professor just had us copy these oil paintings with oil pastels (and watercolor paintings). Thinking back on it, these exercises definitely helped me with color and understanding light on different textures :D Gotta love Cezanne’s apples and Hopper’s landscapes! These are all done on 9”x12” paper. I couldn’t find my big 18”x24” pieces…don’t know if I lost them or not as I moved from apt to apt to home.
First time using livestream so I decided to do an hr speedpaint (which I don’t think I’ve ever done either?) and it was fun. :D A reference (screenshot from korean variety show Invincible Youth hahahha) was loosely used and this was worked at mostly 25-33% zoom in Photoshop.
After attending CTN this weekend, I am both so inspired by all the talent and at the same time discouraged at the disparity between the level I’m at right now and the level I need to be in order to get in and survive in this industry. CTN was definitely the punch in the face I needed to get my lazybutt in gear and really step up the game. I will try to do a lot more exercises to improve my skills and hopefully future tumblr posts will reflect my steps towards greatness! :D
First figure drawing workshop at CDA! :D (Also first fig drawing session in…a year?!)
Was really stiff at the beginning of the workshop but warmed up by the end. Still got looooots of work to do though with figures -___- I was next to a pretty good guy and kept sneaking looks at his techniques and use of lines haha :D I hope he wasn’t (too) creeped out by me.
Also, only did 64/100 figures this week T__T Will pump it up next week and finish all 100! Hopefully by the end of this quarter, my figures will have improved a lot. Go go go!
